Review: Nanny Rose’ Gugo & Lawat Shampoo

I have always wanted to switch to organic shampoos but after my not-so-good experience from a particular brand, I started to develop apprehensions on trying other brands as well. However, with my current facial skin condition (ugh acne!) and upon learning that one of the ingredients of my shampoo can cause acne, I decided to give organic shampoo a go one more time. After all, I have been using Nanny Rose's Queen Bee Sticks and Pulls (wax) for years so I am hoping that their shampoo is equally great.

I know I have said it many times before that when trying out a new product for the first time, it is better to get the smaller size so just in case you don’t like the product, you won’t feel bad tossing it in the trash. But since the bigger size (200 ml) is the only size available at the time and I was too tired to find a smaller bottle, I settled for it. Does this product from a favorite brand have a potential? Find out...

Product Description

This cleverly formulated shampoo helps reduce hair-fall. It contains Gugo, Lawat, Lagundi, and Malunggay Extracts that nourish and revitalize hair follicles, plus a bunch of plant oils that moisturize and add shine to hair. Capped up with a refreshing scent of lemongrass and grapefruit. Gotta love this bottle!

Packaging and Appeal. There is nothing extraordinary about the shape or structure of the bottle and I find the printed label simple but cute. However, there is one thing that I think can be improved. I would love it if the bottle is more pliable just like other shampoo bottles so that it would be easy for the product to come out. Squeezing the bottle can be a struggle at times because it is a bit hard.

The product itself is light yellow and the consistency is almost the same as other shampoos like Pantene.

Effectiveness. The product claims to aid falling hair problems and it's doing ok so far. My falling hair problem is not totally addressed but it has decreased in a way.

But while it helps lessen hair fall, it is not making my hair shiny or soft. It actually makes my hair difficult to manage thus the need to use a conditioner after shampoo. I would have given it a higher rating if it makes my hair shiny even without the use of conditioner.

Scent. I love that the scent of this shampoo is not too fruity or “organic-y”. The smell is so faint you may not notice it at times.

Ingredients. Entada phaseoloides Extract, Litsea glutinosae Extract, Sodium lauroyl sarcosinate, Cocamide DEA, Vitex nigundo Extract, PEG-120 Methyl glucose dioleate, Moringa oleifera Lam Extract, Cocoamidopropyl betaine, Cetrimonium chloride, Glycerine, Phenoxy ethanol, Tetrasodium EDTA, Citrofortunella microcarpa Extract, Dimethicone, Soya bean Oil, Cocos nucifera Oil, Helianthus annuus Oil, Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) Essential Oil, Grapefruit (Citrus grandis) Essential Oil & Menthol. Sulfate-free, parabens-free.

Price. The 100 ml bottle costs Php 99 and the 200 ml costs Php 189. The price of this product is a bit higher than famous brands like Pantene and Dove but with its natural ingredients and how it helped prevent itchy scalp caused by dandruff, I think it is worth it. I’d rather pay a little more than suffer super itchy scalp which is distracting and embarrassing.

Availability. Various Nanny Rose products are available in Watsons and SM Department stores so it is not that difficult to acquire this.

Conclusion:
The Nanny Rose Gugo Lawat Shampoo is a great product for anyone who wants to switch to natural products. If you are suffering from recurring dandruff, I suggest that you give this try in addition to deep conditioning using fresh coconut milk once a week.

While made of gugo that is said to make hair shiny, don’t expect too much in that department. This can make hair hard and difficult to manage so I suggest using an ample amount of conditioner after wash.

  1. Nadine: It does leave a “wiry” feel so what I usually do, I dry my hair using an electric fan & I use a wide tooth comb. It feels soft afterwards. My hair is naturally wavy & I noticed it became more manageable because of the shampoo. I love the scent & my hair is not greasy nor itchy at the end of the day.
